Highlights from Samuel's 1st Month

Our little Samuel had a rough start at first but things continued to improve as we were able to take him home and settle as a family. Here are some highlights from his first month:

As you may have already noticed, we call Samuel, Sammy, for short. Other names he goes by are Sam Man, Little Man, Sam, and Sammy boy. He is just too cute to not have any fun nicknames.

On August 18th, Sammy finally got to come home. Sierra, our dog, didn't know what to do with him at first. She was very excited though and wanted to lick him. Sammy was so tired when we got home that he slept through his first feeding. We tried to wash his hair in the sink to wake him up and found out that he actually loves his hair washed. Sammy woke up just in time for me to go to bed so Kris stayed up with him and the dog.

On August 19th, Sammy had his newborn photos taken at our house. He was so good the whole time. The process was long (4 hours total) but so worth it! He is too precious! He did poop on me though while our photographer was changing the set. It was a good one too. It ran all the way down my leg. I started feeling like a mom.

One of the worst things as a mom is hearing your baby scream. We knew from the NICU that Sammy has a good pair of lungs and belts it out when he is hungry. As we adjust to having him home, we have learned to let him cry a little while we change his diaper. It was hard at first but we had to let him cry so we could actually change him and get his bottle ready for eating time.

On August 21st, I was successfully able to wake up and feed Sammy on my own. Kris was going to have to start working so I needed to try to do night feedings by myself. It was challenging at first but continues to get easier with time.

On August 22nd, we had Sammy's first outing to the pediatrician. We learned that Sammy was in the 85th percentile for weight and 61st percentile for height. We knew we had a big kid!

On August 23rd, we were able to see Sammy's Newborn pictures. Below are some of our favorites. They turned out wonderfully.

On August 24th, Sammy slept 5 full hours. I was a happy mom! Sleep deprivation is no joke as a parent. (I still hope to sleep again someday.)

Excited that Sammy slept so long!

On August 25th, we took my due date picture since it was Sammy's original due date. I am so grateful he came early.

His Nanny came to visit

On August 27th, my mom and I tried an outing with Sammy. We took him to Carters, Osh Kosh, and the grocery store. He did very good until he got hungry. His umbilical cord finally fell off as well (it held on for a long time).

On August 28th, Sammy got his first official bath. He wasn't a fan right away. My mom and I were also able to start finishing up projects for his room. I didn't get everything done before he arrived since he came early.

On August 29th, I had my first Mom breakdown. I cried because I was so tired and Sammy had been fussy. I had to take a minute and relax. I didn't think I was going to make it if I continued to sleep so little (it is crazy how your body just keeps pushing you through it).

Playing video games with Sammy

On August 30th, I started noticing that we needed to track things that Sammy does. He sneezes in 4. He sometimes sounds like a goat around feeding time. He also has started "riding the bike" when he is on the changing table.

On September 1st, we attempted tummy time for the first time. Sammy chose to fall asleep instead of attempting to hold his head up. Sammy also had his first stroller ride around the neighborhood.

On September 2nd, Sammy finally turned his head during tummy time but we found out that he prefers tummy time on us. He likes to hold up his head and move it around. I started dancing and singing to Sammy to help with his development plus it is fun!

Daddy Time

Date Night with Sammy

On September 3rd, Sammy got to experience his first earthquake. The earthquake was in Oklahoma but you could feel the vibration in Kansas City. Today I went on my first outing with Sammy by myself. I took him over to a friends house to meet several people. He did pretty good the whole time.

On September 4th, Sammy started getting really fussy. He had been at nighttime for the past few nights but it got worse on the 4th. We got out of the house to help (Sammy likes to be on the go.)

On September 7th, Sammy had to go to the doctor because of stomach issues and fussiness. We learned that we were going to have to feed him less but more often. I was so sad because I was already so tired. I would also have to start the elimination diet to help him as well. The doctor told us to take turns so we wouldn't "lose it" because the fussiness may continue for awhile. We babied Sammy the rest of the day.

Tried a new baby wrap

He wasn't fussy at the pediatrician's office but he had been for days.

He is so cute though!

On September 8th, Sammy turned 1 month.
